North is a surf forecasting app made for the Belgian and Dutch coastlines. As both a designer and developer, I applied branding strategy, UI/UX design, and full-stack mobile development to create a tool that feels native to the North Sea surf experience.
The idea came from a very personal place. Having grown up surfing the waves of Bali and now the cold, unpredictable waters of Northern Europe, I felt the gap between global surf apps and local conditions. Most tools overlook the micro-conditions unique to this regions tight swell windows, strong winds, and tidal shifts. So I designed and developed North from scratch, with cold-water surfers in mind.
The app pulls live local data from the Royal Institute of Natural Sciences. Including swell, tide, wind and offers a simple community report feature to connect with other surfers in the region. It’s built not just to forecast, but to foster a deeper, more intuitive connection with the coastline.While the core foundations are in place, North is still a work in progress,with ongoing development focused on refining features and expanding its capabilities.
